Chap Winter 2019 Edition

Published on 15th November 2019

Issue 102 of The Chap celebrates the mad, the eccentric and the maverick artiste, commencing with a surreal conversation between actor Tony Pitts and comedian Vic Reeves. We also meet Dexys frontman Kevin Rowland, who discusses his long musical career and allows us a glimpse into his immense personal wardrobe. Maverick icons featured include Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn and David Niven’s army chum Michael Trubshawe, who received a name check in every one of Niven’s films.
Sartorial features include a visit to Mason & Sons, the menswear maker and bespoke tailor housed in John Lennon’s old flat in Marylebone, where an authentic James Bond Conduit Cut suit may now be acquired. We also cross the Atlantic to pay a visit to gentlemen’s emporium Diehl Marcus & Co, while Grey Fox Blog’s David Evans wraps up for winter in heavy overcoats. Shaun Gordon, the dapper young tiemaker, is interviewed, as well as prolific young historian Daisy Dunn. Sophia Coningsby reveals the New World cigars now taking on the mighty Cubans, while Olly Smith pens a letter to a labrador about Amontillado.
‘Legs’ Larry Smith of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band reveals the full story behind the band’s recent court battle to retain their original name, and the Bonzo connection continues with reviews of two new DVD releases that celebrate pre-Python television programmes, one of them with music from the Bonzos. Chris Sullivan pays a visit to the Maltese capital to catch up with some old chums from his Soho nightclub days and also enjoy the Caravaggios, while Gustav Temple visits Puerto Vallarta in Mexico to find the bridge that Richard Burton built for Elizabeth Taylor.
All this plus book reviews, restaurant reviews, military antiques and a visit to Captain Fawcett’s Marvellous Barbershop Museum.
